Italy 2005 - 2 Euro Commemorative Coin - European Constitution
The Greek mythological figure Europa, holding a quill and the text of the European Constitution, with a bull at her side.
Europa was a Phoenician princess, daughter of Agenor, abducted by Zeus because of her beauty. Zeus transformed himself into a white bull to approach her without frightening her and to escape the jealousy of his wife, Hera. She gave her name to the continent.
The Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe (also known as the Treaty of Rome II or the 2004 Treaty of Rome), signed in Rome by the Heads of State and Government of the European Union on October 29, 2004, should have entered into force on November 1, 2006, provided it had been ratified by each of the twenty-five signatory states, which ultimately did not happen. Because of this failure, it was replaced by an amending treaty, the text of which was approved by the Lisbon European Council on October 19, 2007, hence its name, the Lisbon Treaty.
